Coping mechanisms are essential for many who cannot currently address gender dysphoria due to circumstances, unsafe environments, lack of financial resources, or other personal reasons. Some need to manage dysphoria throughout significant portions of their lives using various strategies. Gender transition is not for everybody, nor is it the only viable coping or treatment approach. For some, coping can last throughout their lifetime, depending on strategies employed. However, the challenge with coping is uncertainty—nobody has a crystal ball to predict whether dysphoria will remain manageable long-term or suddenly intensify. Coping falls into two categories: healthy (alleviates distress while providing additional benefits) and unhealthy (temporarily alleviates dysphoria but carries negative consequences).
