Mazda MX-5 / Miata - Are they Hard to Drift?
Mazda MX-5. MX5. Miata. Eunos Roaster. Many names but all the simple, cheap, fun car - or so Ren was told. With the many different layouts at Driftland, could the MX-5 be the perfect balance between driver enjoyment and low cost Drifting? Or is it just too hard to get to grips with for most drifters? Ren dusts off an MX-5 that's been at the track lying unused for 18 months, belonging to friend of the venue and transport hero Mr K. This little MX-5 is an original 1990 1.6 Eunos Roadster running stock power, however (probably fortunately for Ren) it has some nice modifications such as Kaaz 1.5way diff, HSD coilovers, and extended steering lock knuckles. Ren gets the car, pumps up the tyres, checks fluid levels, and we're off! Ren tries three separate clockwise layouts of the track - the lack of power means he can't just accelrate to stretch corners out - it proves pretty tricky. During the shiftlock layout he's clutck kicking up to 6 times through the slow corners, take that poor clutch! Overall - the MX-5 is a tricky car to get to grips with but immensely rewarding when you get it right.
