Little Nellie of Holy God, at just four years old, inspired Pope Pius X to change the age for First Communion. How could such a small child have such a big impact? Nellie Organ, known as Little Nellie of Holy God, was born on August 24, 1903, in Waterford, Ireland. Her early life was marked by hardship. Her mother, Mary Organ, died when Nellie was three, leaving her father, William Organ, to care for four young children. Despite her frail health, Nellie was a beacon of faith from a young age. Unable to care for them, her father placed Nellie with the Good Shepherd Sisters in Cork City. Nellie, a delicate child suffering from tuberculosis and a severe spinal injury, endured great pain and restricted movement. However, her spirit was remarkably strong. The nuns were amazed by her profound spirituality and deep understanding of God, far beyond her years. She had a special devotion to the Infant Jesus, often conversing with a statue of Him and expressing an intense desire to receive Holy Communion. "Nellie loved to visit the chapel, which she called "Holy God's House," and she would spend time talking to Holy God. Seeing Christ being nailed to the Cross, Nellie expressed her bewilderment, "But why Him letting them do that? Him could stop them if Him liked!" When she learned Our Lord let His Blood flow to cleanse us of our sin, she cried, "Poor Holy God! Oh, poor Holy God!" This is why she is known today as Little Nellie of Holy God." Nellie's extraordinary love for Jesus and the Eucharist was evident to everyone around her. She referred to the Eucharist as "Holy God" and demonstrated a reverence that astonished the nuns and priests. At just four years old, she expressed a burning desire to receive Holy Communion, even though the Church's practice at the time was to administer First Communion only to children around the age of 12. Nellie had a remarkable spiritual sense of Jesus's closeness. Her helper, Mary, recounted how she couldn't attend Mass one day, and Nellie remarked, "You have not had Holy God today." Surprised, Mary asked, "How do you know that, Nellie?" Such knowledge in a three-year-old suggested divine inspiration. Sister had told Nellie about the Holy God living in the tabernacle, and the first time she carried Nellie into the chapel for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Nellie pointed to the tabernacle and exclaimed, "There He is. There is Holy God now." From then on, Nellie instinctively knew when Eucharistic Adoration was taking place in the Church. Nellie's recital of the Rosary was particularly edifying. She kissed each bead and the crucifix, reciting each prayer slowly, distinctly, and with profound recollection, remarkable for one so young. One evening, Reverend Mother recounted, "while I was sitting beside her bed, I said to her: 'Shall I talk to you, Baby, or shall we say the Rosary?' 'Say the Rosary, Mudder,' she answered. I had only said a few Hail Marys when I heard her whisper, 'Kneel down, Mudder.' I paid no attention and continued to the end of the first decade, when she repeated in quite a determined tone, 'Kneel down Mudder,' and I had to finish the Rosary on my knees." Nellie longed to make her First Holy Communion, frequently asking, "When will Holy God come into my heart? Oh, I am longing for Holy God." A visiting priest, Father Bury, was informed of her ardent desire. He spoke with Nellie, asking, "What is the Blessed Eucharist?" Nellie's reply was all her own: "It is Holy God; it is Him that makes the nuns and everybody else holy." She also said, "Jesus comes on my tongue and goes down into my heart." Recognizing her readiness, Father Bury informed the bishop, who readily gave permission for her to receive Holy Communion at just four years and three months old. The nuns made her a white frock, veil and wreath. On December 6, 1907, the First Friday in Advent and the Feast of St. Nicholas, patron saint of children, Nellie was brought to the convent chapel for her First Holy Communion. She had spent the entire night preparing her heart to receive Holy God. When Nellie heard the news, her joy was indescribable. "I will have Holy God in my heart!!! I will have Holy God in my heart!" she repeated, unable to sleep from excitement the night before. Father Bury wrote, "The child literally hungered for her God, and received Him from my hands in a transport of love. "Mother Frances described the radiance on the face of Little Nellie as she received her First Communion: "Her features shone as if the great light in her heart reflected itself in her face."
