Lefkada is famous for its crystal waters and astonishing landscape. Tourists tend to spend a great part of their summer vacation here, enjoying the magical scenery, mingling with the locals and exploring the villages scattered in the mountains and along the coastline. A great part of Lefkada tourism is well-developed but there are also some gorgeous spots to enjoy private and more serene moments. Tourism in Lefkada is very popular among families with kids and romantic couples. Accessing the island is achieved by the small floating bridge connecting the north side of Lefkada with mainland Greece. Many visitors choose to fly to Aktion Airport which is located in Preveza but its distance from Lefkada Town does not exceed 30 minutes by car or bus. The island does not boast a main port, either, so reaching it from any port on the mainland is not possible. Lefkada is the fourth largest island of the Ionian Islands and is known for its enticing beaches with turquoise waters. The most famous beach has to be Porto Katsiki on the southwestern side of the island. Equally impressive is Kathisma, a long sandy beach boasting the ideal weather conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, as well as Egremni, which looks like a beach of the Caribbean. The capital, Lefkada Town, is situated in the northeastern part of the island. It is the second place visitors encounter when reaching Lefkada; the first is the Castle of Agia Mavra which sits on a small peninsula between the island and the mainland. The capital has several accommodations, restaurants and shops and is also home to three very interesting museums - the Phonograph Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Folklore Museum. Nidri is the most renowned coastal area on the island as well as the first village that was updated for tourism purposes. From its small port, travelers can embark on a ferry to the adjacent Meganisi island or a boat to one of the tiny islands nearby. Within a small distance from Nidri, one can admire the fairy-tale regional waterfalls. The second small port of the island is located in Vassiliki. It is connected with the picturesque Fiscardo in Kefalonia and the lovely Frikes in Ithaca via ferry during summer, while a small boat that reaches the lovely Agiofili beach also departs from there several times a day. The village is built around the harbor and a lot of restaurants and cafes lie along its promenade. The area is a favorite of watersports enthusiasts, too. Agios Nikitas is perhaps the most quaint seaside village on the island. Another noteworthy area is Sivota, a settlement between Nydri and Vassiliki, where guests can taste palatable fish and seafood in one of the several fish taverns. Except for the aforementioned museums in Lefkada Town and the castle of Agia Mavra, some other attractions that are worthy of a visit are the Museum of Lefkadian Embroidery in Karia and the Monastery of Faneromeni a short distance from the capital. The local products visitors should give a try to are the lentils from Eglouvi village, the Lefkadian salami, the honey from the village of Athani and the rozoli liquor.
