※ This video is an excerpt from Architectural Exploration: Houses - Houses Built for Staring Out , which aired on September 20, 2022. *A House Playing in the Forest* In a forest in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, lies a small earthen house. It is a home designed by a couple of earthen architects who joined forces with people studying earthworks. Although they live in the countryside, they said they needed a small house in the forest to truly rest. Despite owning a vast forest spanning 29,752 square meters, the couple built a small house measuring just 23 square meters. Much like bees and birds build their nests using surrounding materials, the couple constructed the house using only materials found in nature so that they could return to the forest at any time. The walls were built using rice husks, and the plastering, finished with a mixture of lime and sand, creates unique patterns that resemble blooming flowers. Additionally, sorghum husks, typically used as kindling, were cut into specific lengths and placed on the roof; they also made sure to capture the beauty of roof tiles by slightly raising the eaves. The floor was coated with the traditional Korean soybean paste (kongtae) to ensure a smooth finish and prevent stickiness. It is old technology, but a house where the future version of me can live. The couple built this house for the future. The couple created spots for daydreaming throughout the house and the forest. Their favorite spots are the treehouse and the hammock. Seok-gyun stands atop the treehouse with his arms outstretched, feeling the wind with his whole body, while Min-seon lies in the hammock, gazing at the sunlight filtering through the leaves and resonating with the forest.
