Maria Valtorta – Notebooks - February 23, 1946: If Lucifer, the most beautiful, and Adam, the most beloved, could fall, how can a soul that does not fully correspond to its ministry fall? 10:30 AM The Father has been gone for 20 minutes… I brood over my great bitterness… Jesus, who appeared at Communion on the right side of the bed, now consoles me divinely, drawing me to his chest. I enjoy the warmth of his Body through the white woolen fabric of his robe; I feel safe like this, in the gentle grip of his strong hands that force me to stay here, against him, as if he were a simple, friendly man. But tears fall from my eyes all the same, because the Father's lament and his veiled accusation of misguiding him have pained me. Too many things hurt me! The medical incident that occurred this morning, which would have terrified anyone else, has not and does not cause me the slightest anxiety… On the contrary! If only it were for me, too, the murmur in which the voice of the Bridegroom says: "Come!"!!! But the other things! Lying souls! Disobedient souls! Proud souls! Restless souls! Sinful souls! Blasphemous souls! This is what pains me! I understand, I understand more and more the spiritual passion of Jesus... Every soul that is missing is a blow from the scourge, a piercing from a thorn, a crucifixion... And I see only a few souls. He contemplated them all! I cry, and Jesus lets me cry. But crying here, in this grip of love, against a Heart all in love, is not bitter. It is sad, but it is also a relief. Then Jesus orders: "Write what you feel, and then I will dictate, for the Father," and he makes me write without completely removing his embrace; with his left arm and hand, placed over my shoulders, he always keeps me close to his side. Now he speaks. Jesus says: "The strange behavior, to say the least, of men seeks to justify and reassure themselves with excuses or reasons that, while relieving themselves, burden others, placing responsibility on them for the actions of those who wish to relieve themselves. And often they end up placing the blame on God Himself, to the point of accusing Him of being the One who, through little or no light given, allowed a soul to err. For tens of millennia, men have accused God of having led man into sin with the temptation of the forbidden. And so it will be, until the end of time, for all things that are not good. Romualdo, why do you reproach me for not having been clearer? And what more did you want? Don't you know that I am Charity?" Have you not yet felt the infinity of this love that is my essence, which, paternally assisting the desires of its creatures and endorsing some of their imprudence that is not truly sin—doing so to prevent a soul from being shamed for a trivial matter, for a child's whim, and, grateful to the condescending Lord, making imprudence the starting point for a whole holy journey in my ways—of this love that, forgiving the guilty, modifying the initial plan, disrupted by Satan, to always be able to make a soul a masterpiece, does everything to everyone, just to help, console, save? Have you not yet understood that I seek in every way to make saints of all, that I would like to make each of you a voice of mine, to be able to speak to you all, to fill you with Me, to pour Myself out, to be able to have you where I am, all of you, all of you, all of you? Don't you know that as soon as I see a movement in a heart, a good movement, I rush to pour Myself out? Will you not say, like those who do not know Me, "So he is a fool who cannot see the future?" Oh! You will not say that! Think, reflect on My torment, and you will understand My conduct toward the good and the wicked. Is there anyone who is holy, beloved by My heart, or simply eager to be so, and always intent on attaining holiness? It is right that I should make My abode in him, and that he, in union with Me, should find ever greater strength to sanctify himself. Is there anyone who, without being damned, is still a sinner who remains where he is? Why should I not try, by enticing him with spiritual gifts, to bring him out of his stasis? Isn't this done with children, to awaken their intelligence, their will to learn, their attention, and to make them grow in wisdom as well as in stature? And so, to those who remain stuck in their shortcomings, I give a push, a reminder, I offer a gift, a grace, a miracle to instill in them the will to move, to have an impulse that will lift them from their entanglement. Is there anyone who is guilty, a great culprit, a foreseeable future damned? And why should I, the Good Shepherd, the Savior, not continue, until the final hour, until the separation of the soul from the body, to seek, with my love, to save? Remember Dismas... I had met him again and again, without apparent benefit, without apparent intention of meeting him... The unrepentant thief could, in the eyes of the people, have appeared to be my defeat...
