Calm Carving | A Simple Cooking Spoon From A Spalted Black Walnut Blank - Many Knife Grips!

Hello Everyone, I hope you’re well. Today, I calmly carve a simple cooking spoon from a spalted black walnut blank. A blank is a crude, axed version of an outcome that is then refined with a knife. This is the methodology that I use to create a finished spoon. The method encompasses knife grips that I am really drawn to in my practice. I always say that the knife can contain just as much expressionism as a paintbrush and here is why! My shaving tell a lot about my mood, the energy that I am using and the sense of focus that is enabling me to enter a flow state when using my hand tools Here, I use three hand tools. My two hook knives, a very generous gift from my good friend Hinode, based in Osaka, Japan. Hinode is a very talented smith who makes very fine knives and hook knives and pretty much all tools from Japanese steel! I met him recently during my travels and I really enjoyed connecting with him and seeing his beautiful workshop. The knives performed excellently and I feel lucky to own them. I also used my trust Nic Westermann ‘Turning Slöjd’ Knife. This has become my go- to for making spoons as it is a lovely length and great quality steel and the profile is sublime. I tried to capture in this video as many of the complex grips that I enjoy using. Particularly, I really love using the drawing grip down the whole length of the spoon handle. The long shavings really bring me to a sense of calm and I wanted to highlight this in the video. There is a lot of control needed to make long shavings and I love teasing these methods. I also love the clamping method to initially hollow out the spoon bowl. I have re-designed my workbench slightly to be able to clamp spoons comfortably.
