In the heart of French Lorraine rises an impressive relic of European industrial history: the U4 blast furnace. Since the end of the 19th century, pig iron was produced on this vast site. Six blast furnaces once stood here, and thousands of people toiled amidst fire, smoke, steel, and colossal machinery. Production ceased in 1991 – the last fire went out, and a large part of the plant was decommissioned. Today, the preserved U4 blast furnace is an official industrial monument. For just four euros, visitors can explore the visitor area on a designated circular route and gain a fascinating insight into the history of Lorraine's iron and steel industry. But at the far end of the site lies a completely different area. Beyond the official visitor path is the plant's former power and blower center – known in the urban exploration scene as ALIENWORKS. In the enormous hall, historic turbines, blowers, pipelines, and old switchgear still stand. The control room is particularly impressive, with its sweeping staircases, long control panels, and countless instruments. Where machines once roared and the entire blast furnace operation was controlled, there is now complete silence. Dust covers the switches, rust eats away at the metal, and light streams through the large windows onto a facility where time seems to have stood still.
