Gilgo Killer Is CREEPIER I Ever Thought After Hearing This

Maureen Brainard-Barnes was twenty-five, a mother of two, facing eviction and fighting for custody. She rode the Amtrak from Connecticut to Manhattan in July 2007 because she was out of options. She checked into a Midtown motel, worked as an escort for a few days, and on the night of July 9th told a friend she was leaving to meet a client. That call was the last anyone heard from her. Three years later, her remains were found wrapped in burlap along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. Rex Heuermann has since pleaded guilty to her murder. This look back puts Maureen's life first — a songwriter who never got to show the world how talented she was, a mother whose seven-year-old daughter Nicolette would grow up to speak publicly about losing her at the indictment hearing years later. Prosecutors alleged Heuermann used burner phones to contact Maureen, that cell-tower data traced those phones back to Massapequa Park, and that he checked her voicemail after her disappearance. DNA on a leather belt used to bind her remains matched his wife's profile. Then the case of Melissa Barthelemy — the cosmetology graduate from Buffalo who moved to New York to do hair and ended up working escort ads from a basement apartment in the Bronx. She vanished in July 2009 after telling a friend she was going to meet a man. What followed was five weeks of calls from someone using Melissa's phone to her fifteen-year-old sister — always under three minutes, always from crowded Manhattan locations, describing what had happened in terms designed to terrorize. The phone evidence traces the exact route between Heuermann's home and office. He pleaded guilty to both murders. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
