Lithuania during the First World War

During World War One (1914–1918), Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire and found itself on the front lines of the Eastern Front. The war had a devastating impact on the region. By 1915, German forces occupied much of Lithuania after a series of intense battles. Under German occupation, Lithuanians faced harsh conditions, including forced labor, resource requisitioning, and food shortages. However, the occupation also brought new political opportunities. In 1917, as the Russian Empire collapsed due to revolution, Lithuanian nationalists saw a chance for independence. The Vilnius Conference, held in September 1917, resulted in the formation of the Lithuanian Council. This body declared Lithuania's independence on February 16, 1918, although the declaration had limited immediate effect due to the German presence. The end of World War One in 1918 and the subsequent withdrawal of German troops allowed Lithuania to pursue its independence more actively. However, the country soon found itself embroiled in conflicts with Soviet Russia and Poland as it struggled to secure its borders and establish sovereignty.
