The league title will be on the line Friday night as the Margaretta Polar Bears travel to Haas Gymnasium to take on the Willard Flashes in a showdown of the Bays top two teams. Margaretta enters at 17-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference play under head coach Steve Keller Jr., and they’ve looked every bit like a championship team. The Polar Bears are averaging 70.6 points per game while surrendering just 49.1, a margin that explains why eight of their nine league wins have come by 20 points or more. The only game that wasn’t a blowout? A 12-point victory over Willard earlier this season. The Bears have continued to roll down the stretch with a 70-64 win over Shelby and an 89-40 statement against Vermilion. Their balance and defensive pressure have been overwhelming, and junior wing Kale Bailey has come into his own. Bailey, a 5-foot slasher who can attack off the bounce, is also shooting 43 percent from three-point range. He averages 10.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per contest, giving Margaretta another dynamic scoring threat to complement their high-powered offense. The message from the Bears is simple: do your thing and leave no doubt. Standing in their way is a Willard team that refuses to blink. The Flashes are 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the SBC Bay, riding an eight-game winning streak since their January 9th loss to Margaretta. Head coach Joe Bedingfield’s squad has sharpened its edge during that stretch, winning physical, tight games that should prepare them well for a championship atmosphere. Recent victories over Perkins (61-46), Galion (58-48), and Clyde (64-55) show a group comfortable grinding out possessions and closing games late. Freshman J.J. Bedingfield has been a major storyline. The 6-foot-2 guard/forward leads the SBC in three-point shooting at 47.1 percent while averaging 11.5 points per game. The basketball pedigree runs deep — his father is the head coach, and his grandfather Mike won an NCAA title at NC State — but J.J. has carved out his own identity as one of the league’s most dangerous perimeter threats. Friday night could come down to tempo. Margaretta wants to push, score in transition, and let its offensive depth overwhelm opponents.
