Whitstone has been known for its singing for more than 100 years, being represented by various musical groups during that time. The present choir was formed in January 1948, with eight members, at the request of friends of a small neighbouring chapel, to raise funds for an improvement they wished to carry out. Since then, the choir has given more than 850 concerts, travelling throughout Cornwall, Devon and parts of Somerset to give their services. It has also been featured on B.B.C. Television and Radio. The members are mainly connected with agriculture and associated trades. Three of the present choir of ten voices are founder members, while most of the remainder have served with it for 20 years. The original accompanist was with the choir for 21 years and had the distinction of never missing an engagement during that time. The present accompanist is a young and very talented musician. The success of this choir is due largely to the great dedication of its members in regularly attending the weekly rehearsals, never failing to support its many engagements and, in every way, giving the choir first priority. Probably the most distinctive quality of this choir is its clarity of diction. This, together with the close harmony it has achieved, is largely responsible for its continued popularity throughout the years. It is also probably unique in so far as it performs concerts without the obvious control of a conductor. This record has been made in response to continually repeated requests. It is sincerely hoped that it will bring pleasure to all who listen to THE WHITSTONE MALE VOICE CHOIR. Both the Choir and Sentinel Records (Cornwall) Ltd. wish to express their gratitude to David Morris, Manager of The Grenville Hotel, Bude, for his kindness in letting us have the use of the Hotel and for his complete co-operation throughout the recording period.
