Augustine and Why We Cannot Rest
Why do we feel restless even when life is going well? Sixteen hundred years ago, Augustine of Hippo argued that the restlessness of the human heart is not a psychological defect but evidence that we were made for God. In his famous Confessions, Augustine traced his own search for satisfaction through achievement, pleasure, relationships, ambition, and intellectual success, only to discover that none of them could provide the rest his soul was seeking. In this first episode of Autopsy, we examine Augustine's famous claim that "our hearts are restless until they rest in You" and explore what it reveals about anxiety, distraction, desire, and the our search for meaning. Autopsy is a podcast about the hidden theology beneath ordinary Christian experience. Using Scripture and the wisdom of Christians past and present, we explore how theology explains the way we live, struggle, worship, suffer, and hope.
