Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that assault troops from the 38th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade had captured the village of Novoselivka in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region and released a video showing Russian soldiers waving the tricolor flag. Ukrainian forces rejected the claim, saying the footage was staged and revealing what happened next to the soldiers who were later eliminated. Ukraine’s increasingly precise strikes on Russian military targets—both in occupied territories and inside Russia—combined with Moscow’s lack of significant battlefield gains, have fueled speculation that the war could end before the close of 2026. Russian officials claimed their troops had driven Ukrainian forces from fortified positions in Novoselivka, destroyed a Ukrainian platoon, six armored fighting vehicles, 12 vehicles, more than 10 ground robotic systems, and 23 “Baba Yaga” heavy hexacopter drones. However, Ukraine’s 92nd Separate Assault Brigade dismissed the claims as fabricated, along with Russia’s assertion that it had captured the nearby village of Huliaipilske in the Zaporizhzhia region. “Now we’re showing what happened next to those disposable soldiers,” the brigade said. According to the Ukrainian military, troops from the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade and the 61st Separate Mechanized Brigade eliminated the Russian soldiers shortly after they recorded the flag-raising video, while one serviceman was captured alive. “The hopelessness of the Russian assault became especially clear when our drone flew directly up to the occupier carrying the tricolor flag. He didn’t even try to run or hide because he already knew he was doomed,” the brigade added.
