Books are the greatest joy for the taciturn older man, who otherwise avoids all contact with other people. On one of his rounds, nine-year-old Schascha attaches herself to his heels. Reluctantly, Carl takes an interest in the girl, who from then on accompanies him on his errands and calls him the "Bookwalker." Schascha quickly wins the hearts of Carl's regular customers, not only turning their lives upside down but also prompting Carl to break out of his own world.
