Nikkei Food in Lima, Peru 🍣 Japanese-Peruvian Cuisine 🥑 Sushi, Tempura & Fusion Rolls at Taiken 🇯🇵🇵🇪

When we first heard Peru has a special kind of Japanese Peruvian Cuisine we couldn't wait to get our chopsticks on it. Given that we both love Japanese food and we both adore Peruvian cuisine, some kind of hybrid between the two, sounded very enticing. After researching for a while, we decided to visit TAIKEN SUSHI LOUNGE located in Miraflores. The restaurant decor was tastefully put together making us feel like we were having an authentic Japanese restaurant experience. We ended up ordering several Nikkei dishes including acebichado, tempura with local fish, sushi, nigiri and sashimi. It was an incredible meal and we ended up getting some complimentary ceviche inspired rolls near the end of our meal. We couldn't even finish it all. With Peru boasting the second largest Japanese population in South America, it’s no surprise that Nikkei food has become a beloved and innovative culinary genre. We’re excited to try this exciting fusion firsthand! 🪑 Traditional Setting & Warm Welcome Our experience is made even more authentic by sitting Japanese-style on the floor. Arriving late in the afternoon, we are the last guests and the only ones in the restaurant. The staff makes us feel welcome, even turning on a peaceful water fountain for added ambiance, which sets the perfect mood for our meal. 🍢 Starting Strong with Yakitori Skewers We begin with yakitori—grilled chicken skewers sprinkled with spicy chili powder and dipped in a sweet glaze. The flavors hint at both Japanese and Peruvian inspiration, with red pepper and asparagus adding a distinctly Peruvian twist to this classic Japanese dish. 🐟 Pejerrey Tempura: Local Catch, New Spin Next up is Pejerrey tempura, a local fish coated in a light, crispy batter. Unlike the cold dipping sauces typically served with tempura in Japan, here the sauce is piping hot. The tempura is reminiscent of fish and chips but thinner and lighter. The freshness of the fish shines through, offering a perfect marriage of Peruvian seafood and Japanese technique. 🍣 Maki Rolls: Peruvian Flair & Ceviche Influence The maki rolls arrive, each showcasing a creative Nikkei touch. One roll features breaded shrimp, avocado, and fish, with a citrusy, tangy flavor profile reminiscent of ceviche—a nod to Peru’s national dish. The fish is cured in lime, making the flavors pop so much that soy sauce isn’t even necessary. This “acevichado” roll perfectly exemplifies the Nikkei fusion, blending Japanese sushi methods with the bright, bold flavors of Peruvian cuisine. 🧀 “Sam Rolls”: Salmon, Avocado & Cream Cheese For our next selection, we indulge in what Sam dubs “Sam rolls”—his personal favorite combination of salmon, avocado, and cream cheese. Though cream cheese isn’t traditional in Japanese cuisine, its inclusion here adds richness and highlights the playful, fusion spirit of Nikkei food. 🎁 Complimentary Chef’s Rolls: Spicy Tuna Delight Surprise! The chef treats us to a complimentary set of beautiful rolls featuring tuna, avocado, and a garlicky, lime-topped mash with a spicy kick. The flavors once again echo ceviche, blurring the line between Japanese and Peruvian taste profiles. A sweet chili sauce on the side brings an extra layer of complexity, and every bite feels like a discovery. 🥢 Salmon Sashimi: Classic Perfection No Japanese meal is complete without sashimi. Thick slices of fresh salmon are dipped in soy and savored—simple, classic, and utterly delicious. Both agree: salmon sashimi is a forever favorite. ✨ Final Impressions: Nikkei Fusion Magic Reflecting on the meal, both Sam and Audrey are wowed by the innovative flavors and seamless marriage of culinary traditions. Dishes like the acevichado rolls and tempura with local fish are unique and unlike anything found in standard Japanese restaurants worldwide. Nikkei food strikes a perfect balance between Japanese finesse and Peruvian boldness, making it a must-try for food lovers visiting Lima. 💰 Price & Value: A Feast for the Senses The total for this exceptional meal comes to 130 Soles (about $40 USD), which is excellent value considering the quantity, quality, and the generous chef’s extras.
