Betws-y-Coed to Maentwrog North Wales, lovely drive on a rainy day
The drive from Betws-y-Coed to Maentwrog is one of the most beautiful short journeys in North Wales, taking you through the heart of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). Starting in Betws-y-Coed, often called the “gateway to Snowdonia,” you leave behind a charming alpine-style village surrounded by dense forest, stone bridges, and rushing rivers. The road gradually climbs through valleys lined with pine trees and rugged hills before opening into wide mountain landscapes. As you head south-west along the A470 toward Blaenau Ffestiniog, the scenery becomes more dramatic and wild. You pass fast-flowing rivers, rocky slopes, and sweeping bends with views across the mountains. Drivers and bikers often describe these roads as some of the finest scenic routes in Wales because of the combination of open views and twisting sections. Near Blaenau Ffestiniog, the landscape changes again. Old slate quarries scar the mountainsides, giving the area a rugged industrial beauty that tells the story of Wales’ mining heritage. The grey slate tips contrast sharply with the green valleys and forests below. Continuing toward Maentwrog, the road softens into peaceful woodland and lakeside scenery. Around Llyn Mair and the forests near Maentwrog, the drive becomes quieter and more tranquil, with thick oak woods and glimpses of the historic Ffestiniog Railway nearby. The whole journey feels like travelling through different sides of North Wales in less than half an hour — forest, mountains, slate country, lakes, and ancient woodland all in one drive. On a clear day, the views are breathtaking; in mist or rain, the route feels atmospheric and almost mystical. Many visitors describe the area as one of the most picturesque corners of the UK.
