Erin Sunseri Individual Rolling, Greenland National Kayaking Championships, Nuuk 2026
This video follows Team Qajaq USA member Erin Sunseri as she competes in the Individual Rolling Competition at Qaannamik Unammersuarneq, the Greenland National Kayaking Championships, held in Nuuk, Greenland on July 4th, 2026. Competing in the International Class, Erin performs the traditional Greenlandic rolling exercises in the cold waters of Nuuk aboard a beautiful Rebel Naja kayak designed by Johan Wirsén and generously provided by the Swedish Team. The kayak features a custom red and white graphic design inspired by the colors of the Greenlandic flag—a fitting tribute to the culture and traditions being celebrated at this remarkable event. Individual rolling is one of the most demanding and iconic events of the Championships. Competitors have 30 minutes to complete a series of 35 progressively more difficult exercises, each performed on both sides whenever required. The rolls must be attempted in order, and competitors are awarded points for each successful maneuver. Failed rolls may be attempted a second time for fewer points, while particularly difficult maneuvers may be skipped entirely in favor of continuing through the series. Throughout the video, captions provide the Greenlandic names of each rolling maneuver, along with the points awarded for successful completion and Erin’s running total score. As the competition progresses, you can see the effects of prolonged immersion in Greenland’s frigid waters—a reminder that this event tests not only technical skill, but also endurance, concentration, and determination. Greenland rolling is far more than a collection of kayak tricks. These maneuvers originated as practical survival skills developed over centuries by Greenlandic hunters and remain an important part of Greenland’s living kayaking tradition. Qaannamik Unammersuarneq continues that tradition today by bringing together Greenlanders and international paddlers in a celebration of skill, culture, and friendship. Congratulations to Erin on representing Team Qajaq USA in Nuuk!
