ab ovo has established a modern organic hatchery at its Ahlen site, with an annual capacity of approximately 9 million chicks (laying hybrids and broiler chicks). The company supplies chicks to EU and association-certified organic farms. A new development is the approval of the machine-based early sexing system by the Biokreis (Organic Circle), explains Managing Director Malte Wolter. Michael Mergenthaler leads us through the sexing department. The process involves several steps: The eggs are incubated in an incubator, then candled, and unfertilized eggs are removed. Fertilized eggs are processed further, inspected again, and minimally opened using a laser. Allantoic fluid is extracted and analyzed in the laboratory using PCR to determine the sex at an early stage. The egg is then resealed. In the final step, male eggs are removed and processed into animal feed, while female eggs are returned to the incubator. The goal is a sustainable circular economy. The facility is the first organic hatchery worldwide to use this early sexing method.
