Nantou (南投), the only landlocked county in Taiwan (台灣), lies cradled by misty mountains and emerald forests at the heart of the island. Often bypassed by travelers heading for flashier coastal cities, Nantou (南投) rewards the curious with quiet lakes, sacred peaks, indigenous culture, and Taiwan’s most breathtaking highland landscapes. The region’s soul is most vividly felt at Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), a vast alpine lake shrouded in mythology and morning fog. Its name comes from its unique shape: one side round like the sun, the other crescent like the moon. Once a sacred site for the Thao (邵族) people, this lake remains spiritually charged. The surrounding trails, such as the Ci'en Pagoda Trail (慈恩塔步道) and the lakeside bikeway, invite slow exploration, with temples, pavilions, and wild butterflies along the way. Nantou (南投) is also home to some of Taiwan's most sacred mountains. Yushan (玉山), East Asia’s highest peak, sits just beyond its border, but the county itself hosts the towering peaks of Hehuanshan (合歡山), where visitors can drive to alpine elevations and watch the sunrise above a sea of clouds. In winter, these slopes may even offer a rare Taiwanese snowfall. Not far from Hehuanshan lies Cingjing (清境), a highland farming area often called the "Switzerland of Taiwan." Perched above 1,700 meters, Cingjing (清境) is known for its rolling green meadows, cool mountain air, and grazing sheep that delight families and photographers alike.
