Mt. Nantai | 男体山: An Autumn Hike To Nikko's Most Sacred Mountain

Mt. Nantai is a sacred mountain in Nikko, Tochigi standing tall at 2,486 meters. It is the object of worship of Futarasan Shrine, which also happens to be the trailhead, but make sure to go to the Chugushi sub-shrine. Mt. Nantai is a stratovolcano and is a prominent peak around the area which can be easily seen on a clear day. It is also one of the 100 Famous Mountains in Japan. As Nikko is also known to be an autumn destination, we have set out to hike during the 紅葉 (koyo) or autumn foliage season.
