Levon Helm on Letterman, January 6 and 11, 1983
Levon had been scheduled to appear on the show that aired on January 6, 1983 (taped the day before) but he never showed up. So Dave invited to home base the show's Talent Coordinator, Segment Producer and fellow writer, Gerard Mulligan, to discuss what Levon could have talked about if he were there. Levon's manager was in the green room, so Dave tried to bring him out. A week later, on January 11, Levon finally arrived and apologized for his no-show the previous week due to a fire that had destroyed his pick-up truck. After chatting with Dave and performing "Rag Mama Rag," Levon sat in with the band for the rest of the show. In addition here are the songs Levon performed with the band during the commercial breaks: first, "Caldonia," then "Hand Jive," and finally "Just Goes to Show You (The World is Mad)" (many thanks to Babbage3 for identifying it).
