जब दुनिया चुप थी, भारत मालदीव बचाने उड़ चला | Operation Cactus | ITIHAS Operation Cactus: जब दुनिया चुप थी, भारत मालदीव बचाने उड़ चला Operation Cactus 1988 was the Indian military mission that stopped a coup attempt in the Maldives and saved the government of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. When the major powers of the world could not provide immediate help, India changed history with the combined strength of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy. On the morning of 3 November 1988, the Maldivian capital Malé suddenly descended into gunfire, fear, and chaos. Fighters linked to PLOTE mercenaries and Abdullah Luthufi tried to seize key locations such as the radio station, television station, and the presidential palace. Their goal was to capture President Gayoom, change the government, and turn the Maldives, located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, into a dangerous strategic base. But President Gayoom escaped. And that one event changed the entire story. The Maldives asked several countries for help, but India was the one that decided to take immediate military action. Within a few hours, the Rajiv Gandhi government approved Operation Cactus. Indian Air Force IL-76 aircraft took off from Agra, Indian paratroopers landed at Hulhule airstrip, and then moved into Malé to secure the president. But the story did not end there. The fleeing mercenaries escaped toward the sea with hostages on board MV Progress Light. After this, the Indian Navy’s INS Godavari and INS Betwa began pursuing them. IL-38 and TU-142M aircraft carried out continuous surveillance, and eventually the Indian Navy brought the hostage crisis to an end. This was not just a military operation. It was a story of India’s regional power, speed, trust, and responsibility. In this documentary, discover the complete story of Operation Cactus — the Maldives Coup of 1988, Rajiv Gandhi’s decision, the Indian Army’s landing, the Indian Air Force’s daring mission, the Indian Navy’s sea chase, and the moment India showed the world that it would not remain a mere spectator in the Indian Ocean.
