Photoelectric Effect & Wave-Particle Duality | 6.1 General Chemistry
Nature of Light Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on the nature of light and the Photoelectric Effect. Light is described as having Wave-Particle Duality in which it exhibits both wave-like and particle-like behavior. In having wave-like properties light has both a wavelength and a frequency and the mathematical relationship between them is presented. In exhibiting particle-like behavior light comes in discrete packets of energy (i.e. quanta) that are referred to as photons and the relationship between the energy of a photon to its frequency and wavelength is presented. Electromagnetic Spectrum The divisions of the electromagnetic spectrum are also presented in terms of energy, frequency, and wavelength including gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves, and radio waves. Photoelectric Effect The lesson is concluded with a presentation of the Photoelectric Effect in which electrons are ejected from a metal upon irradiation with light. A minimum threshold energy for these photons is required, referred to as the work function of a metal, and photons of energy greater than this amount result in greater kinetic energy for the ejected electrons. I've embedded this playlist as a course on my website with all the lessons organized by chapter in a collapsible menu and much of the content from the study guide included on the page.
