Why Would Anyone Build A Fuzz Like This?

Why would anyone deliberately build a fuzz pedal that sounds thinner than almost everything else? Most fuzz pedals chase more sustain, more compression and more low end. The Mosrite Fuzzrite became famous by doing almost the exact opposite. Instead of trying to make your guitar sound bigger, it was designed to cut through a band mix with a sharp, aggressive attack that has remained instantly recognisable for more than sixty years. In this video I build a proper germanium Fuzzrite and try to understand why such an unusual circuit has survived for so long. What started as a straightforward build quickly became one of the most obsessive projects I have ever undertaken. The enclosure was hand painted by Ian Ward, whose artwork has found its way to David Gilmour, Sting, Geddy Lee, Jason Momoa, Justin Hawkins, Fender Custom Shop, Atkin Guitars and the Buddy Holly Foundation. Remarkably, this is the first guitar pedal Ian has ever painted. This is not just another vintage fuzz build. It is an attempt to understand why one of the strangest guitar circuits ever designed still has devoted followers decades later. Can you build a better Fuzzrite without accidentally removing the very behaviour that made it famous? Or are its flaws actually the feature?
