Lessons 6 & 7 | Madd Al Muttasil | Madd Al Laazim | Your Tajweed Made Easy
With Madd Al Muttassil, the madd occurs in the same word, not between two words, on a madd aslee, preceeded by a hamzah, and this time it is waajib meaning obligatory, and you can still do between 4-5 beats. In the previous lesson 5 we mentioned madd al munfasil, and we said it occurs between 2 words, at the end of the first word, on a madd aslee or long vowel, preceeded by a hamzah, that it is jaaiz (permissible) and that in Hafs An Asim 4 beats of madd is preferred, although you can do 4-5 beats. In this book, Your Tajweed Made Easy, and in a few tajweed books I have seen, there is a distinction of length between madd al munfasil which is done with 4 beats, and this madd of today's lesson madd al muttasil is done with 5 beats. Some say it doesn't matter whether you pick 4 or 5 for both, whether munfasil or muttasil as long as you stick to only one, either 4 or 5 for the entirety of your recitation or even for life, but not to swap between 4 and 5 beats. This is something you should consult with your own teacher. The point to remember here is that this should not become a subject for disagreement, as whether you do 4 or 5 beats it does not change the meaning of that word, it is not a mistake. My personal advice for beginners is to stick to 4 beats if you find it difficult to know which one is 4 or 5, as long as you make it very clear in your recitation and you don't turn each madd into a 2 beats or a 6 beats madd, which are different rulings. Also, because madd muttasil is waajib (obligatory), but madd munfasil is jaaiz (permissible), my other personal advice is to always try to do madds on both for beginners, it does take a bit of practice and control of your breathing which Insha Alah you will develop in time under the supervision of a qualified teacher.
