Introducing Jamaican Traditional Folk to those beyond our shores is never something I take lightly. Our ancestral practices are sacred — they are identity, memory, spirit, and survival. I do not normally practise teaching these forms to foreigners, because this culture must be protected, respected, and never diluted. However, as kimikoversatile, I made a conscious and intentional choice to share a small, guided piece of my roots with these students — not for entertainment, but for education, awareness, and reverence. This class goes deeper than dancehall. We journey back to Africa, through Kumina, Revival, Dinki Mini, and other traditional folk forms — understanding the drums, the songs, the movement, and the spiritual language that shaped who we are as Jamaican people. Only then can one truly understand where dancehall comes from and why it moves the way it does. This is not just dance. This is history in motion. This is ancestral knowledge passed with care.
