Camping, Fishing and Campfire Stove Cooking on Cast Iron! Lol! I generally prefer the road less traveled but this 4x4 route takes that sentiment to a whole new level! My filming did not do this terrible path justice! Huge boulders sticking up out of the ground most everywhere with deadfall in the most inconvenient places. The trees have grown in tight over the years making it very difficult for the old 66 to fit through some spots. These aspects combined with a lack of power steering a grabby clutch and a stiff suspension made these two miles of trail feel like a marathon... But the pay-off? The pay-off was totally worth the all planning, packing and the hard off-road travel! This small natural lake sits just below the top of the mountain at about ten thousand feet. Above the lake a rocky cliff face that was framed by pines and aspens made it the perfect place for the sunrise to project its first light…marking what was sure to be a perfect day. The lake is quite shallow and probably wouldn't sustain a trout population through the winter if not for a very deep channel on the far end. When I first arrived and began fishing, I went a while without a bite... I started to wonder if the trout had survived the winter when, all of a sudden... Wham! I felt the unmistakable tug of a very solid bite! I set the hook and the fight was ON! I don't know how this lake supports such large fish, but all four Brook Trout I caught were very healthy and quite fat! Impressive considering "ice-off" had just taken place. In fact, a large slab of ice still survived on the far bank where it received the least amount of exposure to the sun. Father Day SALE!
