CHILE: ENGLANDS PRINCE WILLIAMS ADVENTURE
(11 Dec 2000) English/Nat More pictures have been made available of Prince William on his gap year adventures in Chile. The British royal is seen cooking - and burning - porridge for his expedition team as well getting down on his hands and knees to scrub a toilet floor. But it's not all domestic chores - William also does a spot of D-J-ing as well as some loud Hokey-Kokey dancing with local children. Prince William is nearing the end of his 10-week trip to Patagonia, southern Chile. The young Royal is on the second stage of his year out before university, working as a volunteer with the Raleigh International organisation. In the remote coastal village of Tortel, where he is currently seeing out the final days of his travels, William has made friends with a group of local children. The school children have clearly developed a close bond with the young Raleigh volunteer, with one small boy always managing to pick on the future King for some rough play. His determination to be accepted at face value by his Raleigh peers - he insisted on being called Will or William - seemed to have paid off. William said he decided to join an expedition with Raleigh International because he wanted to do something "different". In a series of interviews, the young royal described the team's outdoor lifestyle saying he'd mostly been sleeping in tents or under the stars. He describes sleeping amongst the slides and climbing frames of a former nursery in Tortel as "pure luxury" compared to what his team had been used to. The lack of privacy has been something the future King of Great Britain and the Commonwealth has had to get used to. Describing himself as a "very private person" he says there's always other people around and coping with this is something he's had to manage. But he seems to rejoice in the lack of what he calls "special treatment". William says that he thinks he gets along so well with his colleagues because he's determined not to be treated differently. He also says he loves the fact that "out here" there's nobody "chasing me around" - by which he must mean the media. He says this is "brilliant". But it hasn't all been an easy ride. The young royal has clearly had to work hard and even some of the fun hasn't been quite so fun. He describes the team's first attempt at some real kayaking as the lowest point on the trip. He said the moment the volunteers arrived at the first kayaking base, "it started raining" and they were "stuck there for five days" because it didn't stop raining. SUPER CAPTION: Prince William SOUNDBITE: (English) "We're living in an old nursery, but it has got a vague carpet, a roof over our heads which is more than we've had, sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag with about 16 other people all cramped together underneath a slide or a climbing frame or something. There's one bathroom, it's like, it's all you need really. And a small kitchen at the end with a stove. It's definitely more than we've had. Normally we sleep out in a tent, if not we sleep in a bivy underneath the stars, or under the rain. Sharing a tent with three people - two other people - there's three of you - and cooking over an open fire, even when it's raining. So this is pure luxury compared to what we've had." SUPER CAPTION: Prince William UPSOUND: (English) "I hope you're doing that because you've got smoke in your eyes and your eyes aren't watering because it's that revolting."
