We REMOVED Our 500-Hour Cummins Engines | Hybrid Electric Trawler

Today is a major milestone for Tangaroa and our hybrid-electric conversion, Operation Silent Running. With just over 500 hours on them, our Cummins engines — Stella and Portia — are coming out of the boat, along with the rest of the engine room equipment. These engines were installed only a year and a half ago, which makes this moment both strange and significant. Removing them is a necessary step if we’re serious about converting Tangaroa to a hybrid-electric system. To move forward, the engine room needs to be completely empty and reset to a clean slate. In this video, the crane arrives early, the hatches come open, and it’s all hands on deck as we remove the Cummins engines, asbestos mufflers, and everything else standing in the way of the next phase. This is the point where planning turns into action, and the hybrid-electric build truly begins. Some people think this decision is crazy. Others understand exactly why we’re doing it. Either way, this is a defining moment in Tangaroa’s story — and the start of a very different kind of engine room. Thanks for following along as we take this big step toward a quieter, more efficient future for our 78-foot aluminum yacht. We’re partnering with OSEA Boats on Tangaroa’s Hybrid-Electric conversion. This project is crowd-funded and supported by our online crew, not handed to us for free. We’re investing our own money into a system we believe in and documenting the entire build in real time—what works, what doesn’t, and what it actually takes to convert a 56-year-old aluminum motor yacht to Hybrid-Electric. Our goal is simple: show real-world results, not marketing claims. ⚓ Join the Crew Onboard Tangaroa If you want the full story — not just the YouTube edit — joining our Online Crew is the best way to support what we do and be part of what’s coming next.
