Danny Kaye 9 Royal Command Performance (1948)
Comedian / film star / singer Danny Kaye in action at Royal Command Performance 1948 - London Palladium. Unedited footage / cuts / rushes / out takes. M/S of theatre programme on the lap (?) of a lady in the audience at the show. Danny Kaye on stage taking bows to huge applause. When applause dies down he says it's very nice to be back home at the Palladium. Cut to Danny singing comical, tongue-twisting song. (Most of this is duplicate from footage in Danny Kaye 2, but closer shots - good!) He makes reference to his hair looking like Hannen Swaffer's (theatre critic). Danny does funny business, conducting the band and then singing 'Tip Toe Through The Tulips' while stomping his feet. He does impression of a child speaking and then runs over to the band conductor and hugs him. Walking back to the microphone he starts to introduce a song about a young man, very interested in the ballet. M/Ss of Danny speaking, singing and gesticulating - some of this footage would make great stills. The song / monologue is a typical Danny Kaye song, in foreign accent with lots of tongue-twisting and jokes. Cut to Danny mopping his face with his handkerchief. He walks over the piano in the pit to look at the audience, then says "People!" and rushes back to the stage in mock fright. He then does an impression of a singer who can't quite stay on pitch, walking about the stage in a funny way, then starts to sing 'Begin The Beguine', going out of key now and then - it's very funny! Cut to Danny at microphone - audience calling out 'Ballin' The Jack' (requesting the next song?). He starts to sing 'Ballin' The Jack' in a very understated way. Item ends a short way into the song. See other records for more of the performance and excellent rehearsal footage. FILM ID:2749.04 FOR LICENSING ENQUIRIES VISIT http://www.britishpathe.com/
