It has been confirmed that doctors from the Korean Academy of Family Medicine, who were on a flight to the Philippines to attend a global academic conference, saved the life of a patient who lost consciousness and collapsed on board by providing emergency treatment. On the 24th, shortly after takeoff, urgent shouts from flight attendants searching for a doctor rang out on a flight departing from Incheon bound for Manila, Philippines. A middle-aged foreign woman was found collapsed in front of the airplane restroom, her face pale. [Professor Kim Jeong-hwan, Gangnam Eulji University Hospital: Her face had turned white due to cyanosis, and her pulse was very weak. It seemed like she would soon experience what is commonly called respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest...] At the time, seven doctors were on board the flight to attend the World Academy of Family Medicine Asia-Pacific Regional Conference. These included Kim Cheol-min, Chairman of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine and Professor of Family Medicine at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital; Professor Kim Jeong-hwan of Gangnam Eulji University Hospital; and Myung Seung-kwon, Dean of the Graduate School at the National Cancer Center. According to Professor Kim Jeong-hwan, who was present at the scene, they attempted intubation to secure the patient's airway, but the tongue had already begun to retract. Instead of intubating, Professor Kim Cheol-min inserted a laryngeal mask that was on board, while Professor Kim checked breathing sounds with a stethoscope and monitored the patient's condition using a manual ventilator. [Professor Kim Jeong-hwan, Gangnam Eulji University Hospital: There was a defibrillator on board that delivers electric shocks to the heart. So, we attached it and prepared to use it immediately in the event of cardiac arrest.] At the time, the patient was suspected of having a right-sided cerebral infarction. Doctors sitting in other seats also gathered one after another and assisted with the patient's emergency treatment for about three and a half hours until arrival in Manila, and the patient was gradually able to recover consciousness and breathing. [Professor Kim Jeong-hwan, Gangnam Eulji University Hospital: Dr. Myeong Seung-kwon from the National Cancer Center came and secured a pathway for intravenous injection, and while I was continuously pumping the Ambu bag (manual ventilator), signs of gradual recovery began to appear. We took turns watching over the patient, switching hands and resting as we went. The fact that we were able to share and continuously perform our respective roles without being told what to do—what should I call it? A sense of camaraderie? Trusting each other and moving forward...] Professor Kim Jeong-hwan remarked that receiving a 'doctor call' for an emergency patient on an airplane is a very rare occurrence and wished for the patient's speedy recovery.
