The worst of all the sins the Israelites committed in the desert was that of the golden calf, an event recounted in Exodus 32. It is the only transgression that led Yahweh to attempt to annihilate the people of Israel (Exodus 32:10). The possible association of the golden calf with calf-like deities, such as Baal in Canaan, Ra, Apis, or Ptah in Egypt, or Sin in Mesopotamia, supports the premise of the Israelites' inclination toward the worship of foreign gods to the detriment of Yahweh's worship.
