«СВЯТА ГАЛИЧИНА» Чи так це?

«Glory to Jesus» — that’s how people usually greet one another in one of Ukraine’s ethnographic regions, specifically in Galicia, and if you say «Good day,» they’ll likely assume you’re from one of Ukraine’s eastern regions. Galicians quite rightly consider themselves the most devout, religious, or pious region of Ukraine. After all, as we’ve already mentioned, you won’t find such a concentration of churches, chapels, shrines, and the like anywhere else in Ukraine. But why, alongside thousands of magnificent cathedrals, tens of thousands of chapels, and hundreds of thousands of crosses, do hundreds of Roman Catholic churches stand empty and in ruins — some of which have even been turned into brothels — while Catholic cemeteries are overgrown with bushes and thickets? And are Galicia and its inhabitants holy, or can a person and a land even be holy? And does this insane number of holy sites speak to true faith? For three days, we searched for answers to these questions across the Lviv region, starting in the Boiko Beskids and ending in the vicinity of Zolochiv.
