You will learn why a fish is led by its nose and not its eyes, the four-day fermenting method that turns a few cents of chicken feed into the most powerful bait on the bank, how to read the jar so you know when it is ready, how to bait your hook with it, and the chumming trick my grandfather called feeding the hole that brings every fish downstream right to your line. All of it for the price of a bag of scratch feed, and one bag will last you the whole season. I am also going to tell you the part that might make you uneasy — which is that the bait companies have known about this for a hundred years, and they will never sell it to you. The reason is simple, and I will explain it. Grain you sour in a jar on your own porch does not refill itself at the register every Saturday morning. They sell you the shelf jar with the bright label, and the fish, who cannot read labels, swim right past it to the farmer's boy with the sour corn. This is not the only way you have been told to fish. It is not even the best way. It is just the way somebody makes money from. When you cannot drive to the store and you cannot pay for the jar with the bright label, you figure out what actually works with what you have at hand.
