The story of María Dolores, or Lola, before she took on an alias, began in 1906 in Mexico City, specifically in the La Merced neighborhood. Her father was a merchant who would disappear for days at a time and appear sleeping on sidewalks, lulled by cheap rum, and her mother worked as a sex worker and ran a chicharrones stand.
