One player makes a completely wild threat with their starting placement, a move that would hurt both of us and barely help them. It turns into a negotiation I never expected and the early game becomes all about avoiding a disaster before the match even begins. Once the board settles, the game actually turns into a really high level fight with tight production, tough trading, and constant pressure from every direction. The player who made the threat stays involved all game and the match ends up being way closer and more interesting than anyone would guess from the opening.
