We spent two days traveling through the wild taiga to meet these forest people, who live as their ancestors did over a century ago. Katanga was once a land of thousands of reindeer herds and vast dynasties of reindeer herders. But there were times when the Evenks were forced to abandon their traditional way of life, settle in villages, and work on collective farms. But for centuries, the taiga was their home! Alas, many, many Evenks in the northern Irkutsk region have stopped herding reindeer. Only a few remain—just four families.
