Howells’ “Gloucester Service” Magnificat: Gloucester Cathedral 1977 (John Sanders)
From an edition of the BBC radio series “Reflections in Words & Music”, recorded in 1977 and broadcast on 18 April 1980. With the choir of Gloucester Cathedral, directed by John Sanders, and Andrew Millington (organ). Herbert Howells wrote twenty settings of the Evening Canticles. Encouraged by the success of his 1945 “Collegium Regale” setting for King’s College Cambridge, he wrote this one for Gloucester a year later.
