This is the story of how a Lincolnshire marsh village became an empire built on cod, how one man named Carl Ross turned a 34-employee fish merchant into Europe's largest fishing fleet, and how three Cod Wars with Iceland, rigged EU quotas, and broken Brexit promises took it all apart. Along the way, Grimsby's trawlermen died at forty times the rate of factory workers, 292 of its men never came home from the Second World War, and the government eventually offered the survivors a thousand pounds each for their trouble. The Dock Tower still stands, but the town it was built for is gone.
