THE SECRET GOLD DEAL: Lobengula’s Fatal Mistake
In 1888, King Lobengula of the Ndebele signed an agreement with Charles Rudd, an agent representing Cecil Rhodes. Known as the Rudd Concession, the document granted extensive mining rights in Lobengula’s territories. But the king and the concessionaires did not appear to understand the agreement in the same way. Lobengula later protested that he had been deceived and attempted to repudiate the deal. Cecil Rhodes used the concession to strengthen his request for a British royal charter. The resulting British South Africa Company soon expanded into territories that became known as Rhodesia, transforming the political future of southern Africa. This is the story of the disputed gold deal that helped open the door to conquest, colonization, and the destruction of an independent kingdom. #RuddConcession #AfricanHistory #CecilRhodes #ZimbabweHistory #Colonialism
