Coronel (R) Julio Castañer y Caso Quemados: "Tengo la convicción absoluta que probaré mi inocencia"
It was late 1985, and Chile was going through a tense period when Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship rejected the national agreement proposed by the opposition. The following year, the general harshly reprimanded the Carabineros for considering them an institution that acted softly during protests and acts of public unrest. In response, in 1986, the Chilean Army created the Fundamental Anti-Subversive Unit, which was guaranteed implementation and anonymity in the performance of its duties. On July 2, in the midst of a national strike, in the General Velásquez sector and in a remote, lonely alley, two young men were captured by one of the many military patrols deployed. They were Rodrigo Rojas, 19, and Carmen Gloria Quintana, 18, who were burned and abandoned on a road in Quilicura. Rodrigo died from his serious injuries, while Carmen managed to survive after numerous surgeries. To learn more about this case, we're joined by retired Army Colonel Julio Castañer, who was there and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Santiago Court of Appeals for this crime. The case is expected to be reviewed by the Supreme Court this year. Below, watch the full interview with Tomás Mosciatti.
