Synopsis: Tom Thumb was a boy born as small as a thumb. He was the youngest of seven children born to a woodcutter and his wife, who were so poor they were forced to abandon their children in the forest. When the time came, Tom Thumb, who had overheard his parents' plan, dropped white pebbles along the path, and so he and his brothers were able to find their way home just as a stroke of luck improved their parents' finances. This run of good fortune was short-lived, and Tom Thumb's parents were forced to abandon their children once again. This time, Tom Thumb scattered breadcrumbs instead of pebbles, but the birds ate them, and he couldn't find his way back. So they wandered through the forest until they came to a house that turned out to belong to an ogre, who had a taste for eating children, and who lived there with his wife and seven daughters. When the ogre discovered the children, he wanted to eat them, but the woman convinced him to let them stay and thus save them for when food became scarce. Tom Thumb took advantage of the night to exchange his and his brothers' caps for the crowns of the ogre's daughters, and so it was they who, while they slept, were killed by their own father the following morning. Thus, Tom Thumb and his brothers were able to escape. When the ogre realized what had happened, he chased the children, wearing his seven-league boots, so called because that was the distance they allowed him to cover with each stride. The ogre searched for the children for so long that he became exhausted and went to sleep, unaware that Tom Thumb was watching him. Tom Thumb stole the boots and used them to reach the king's palace and enter his service as a messenger, which made him so rich that neither he nor his family ever went hungry again.
