What if Balerion the Dread Survived During Viserys' Reign? Let's explore the depths of it in the video 8 year old Viserys rushes into the cave where the dragons were being housed after Balerion had destroyed the dragonpit two decades earlier. His mother's dying words played in his mind. It was time for him to follow in her footsteps and claim a dragon. He had to protect the family. The dragonkeepers attempt to stop the young prince, but Viserys evades them and runs between the sleeping Caraxes and Vhagar, toward the shadowy alcove where a large shadow shifted and growled. As Viserys gets close, the shadow rises up onto his massive wing claws and emerges from the darkness. Balerion the Black Dread, mightiest of all the Targaryen dragons looks down at Viserys with his giant red eyes, then as if to prevent the dragon keepers from coming close, Balerion puts his treetrunk sized tail around Viserys. Opening his jaws, Balerion lets out a threatening growl, as if he were building up to a roar, or worse, fire. Dragonkeeper: Get the prince to safety! Baelon: No, let my son claim the dragon. It's his right. The small boy should have felt fear facing a beast like this, but his grief and anger at the world for taking his mother and brother are stronger than any fear at facing this behemoth. Sucking in his breath, Viserys wordlessly yells at Balerion until he's hoarse. It was a puny sound and Viserys was immediately ashamed when he ran out of breath. However, Balerion didn't snatch him up or even just go back to his cave. Instead, the black dread lowers himself to the ground to allow Viserys to clamber onto his back. Eagerly, Viserys urges Balerion into the sky. With a roar, Balerion charges out into the sky above the Blackwater and surges skyward like an arrow from a string. Down below he can hear his father and brother cheering. Baelon: That's my boy! Well done! Grinning, Viserys urges his dragon for more speed, and Balerion obliges. The huge black dragon circles the city three times, but then something changes. The black dragon turns and starts heading toward the west. Viserys: What are you doing? We need to go back. Balerion ignores him and keeps flying toward the west, shooting over the landscape. When his son doesn't return after a few minutes and the sounds of wings start getting more distant, fear immediately rises inside Baelon. Not wanting his son to end up like Aera, Baelon mounts Vhagar and flies after his son. However, some sorcery seems to have given speed to the Black Dread, and he disappears into the west. As the black dread approaches Oldtown, Viserys tries to get control over his dragon, but Balerion seems to have his eye set on the Citadel. Finally, the great dragon lands on the walls of the city. For a moment, Balerion silently glares at the Citadel, then he opens his maw and roars. Viserys feels the heat building inside Balerion, and tries to stop him, but Balerion unleashes a torrent of fire at the Citadel. Twenty years earlier (Show on Screen) Pain racks Balerion as the great black dragon flies towards King's Landing. The pain from the various gashes from fighting the large chimera in Valyria hurt, but something was burning inside him, almost as if tiny creatures were burrowing into him. He can feel his bond's pain as similar creatures roiled around inside her. She'd said her name was Aerea when she'd claimed him and taken him flying in search of someone from her past. Elissa perhaps, Balerion could barely remember the name his bond had mentioned. The pain was terrible. Something gnaws at his mind, firewyrms trying to seize his will. Roaring, Balerion descends towards King's Landing, feeling his bond's need to be home before she died. He had to do what his bond wished. He'd done it for Daenys, Aegon, and Maegor. He would do it for Aerea. With a loud thud, Balerion lands in the open area of the red stone den where his much smaller dragonkin lived. When he lowers his head, the small softskins scream and run, then two of Aegon's silver haired hatchlings, Vermithor's bond, Jaeherys, and Silverwing's bond, Alysanne, run out as Aerea slips down his back. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
