How much does it really cost to heat domestic hot water? Will a heat pump, gas, coal, wood, or perhaps a solar installation be the cheapest? In this episode of the Energy Talk Show, Grzegorz Burek and Dawid Pantera compare the costs of heating domestic hot water using various energy sources. The comparison includes air-source and ground-source heat pumps, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, heating oil, pellets, coal, and wood. For our calculations, we assumed a four-person household, 50 liters of hot water consumption per person per day, and a water temperature of 45°C. Under these assumptions, the annual energy demand for hot water heating is just under 3,000 kWh. In this episode, we also explain: – why actual pellet and coal consumption can be much higher than simple calculations suggest, – how fixed fees affect the cost of using natural gas, – how much can be saved with solar collectors, – how G11 and G12w tariffs affect heat pump operating costs, – whether it's worth heating water once a day, – how circulating hot water affects comfort and bills, – why direct water heating with an electric heater is one of the most expensive solutions. The cost of preparing hot water depends not only on the price of fuel or electricity.
