Munakata Taisha is the collective name for three distinct shrines: Hetsu-miya: Situated on the mainland. Nakatsu-miya: Located on Oshima, the largest island in Fukuoka Prefecture. Okitsu-miya: Located on the sacred island of Okinoshima, floating in the secluded sea 49km further away. The Kanji character "津" (Tsu) found in the names of these shrines was traditionally read as "Watari," meaning "ferry" or "crossing." In essence, Munakata Taisha is the sanctuary that governs the "Sea Route" itself, connecting the islands.
