【#10】「師匠!私を弟子にしてください」積丹町の漁師に1日弟子入り!前編」(11月11日放送)
This project involves apprenticing for a day to professionals in various professions that support Hokkaido! It's a "work experience documentary" that uncovers the work styles and dedication of each individual. Apprenticing for a Day to a Yellowtail Fisherman in Shakotan Town Azuma: "It's 3:30 AM. Today we're at Furubira Fishing Port. Today, I'll be boarding this boat and apprenticing to a fishing master!" This time, our master is a fisherman with eight years of experience. He's Shotaka Yamazaki, the boatman of the Daijuhachi Marueimaru. Azuma, in his second year with the company, will be apprenticing to a fishing master! Azuma: "What kind of fishing will we go fishing for today?" Yamazaki: "Yellowtail. I think it's a fish that's attracting attention throughout Hokkaido right now." In Hokkaido, salmon catches have been declining year by year. Meanwhile, off the coast of the Shakotan Peninsula, large numbers of yellowtail have been falling into fixed nets since around 2013! Among them, there's the top-quality brand yellowtail, "Yellowtail Treasure," which has cleared strict conditions. This fishing trip will target this "Yellowtail Treasure"! We're heading out to fish for the "Yellowtail Treasure"...but...! Yamazaki: "The conditions offshore are pretty bad... I think it'll be tough today. But I think we'll head out anyway." Azuma: "I get a little seasick, so I'm a bit worried." Yamazaki: "I think I'll get really seasick." We set sail at 4 AM. Azuma: "What kind of fishing are we doing today?" Yamazaki: "They're calling it large-scale fixed-net fishing..." Typical set-net fishing involves setting up a large net and waiting for migrating fish to enter. Fish are guided by a fence net, pass through a playground, climb a net, and finally into a box net. The net is then raised and the fishing begins. Yamazaki: "The waves are pretty big." Higashimine: "Wow! Wow, wow, wow, wow. Master, the waves are pretty big. How are they today?" Yamazaki: "It looks pretty rough, so I think we should head back. We're going back!" Higashimine: "So, Master, it seems you're heading back! Let's head back! It's already disgusting!" The waves are about 2 meters high. That day's catch will be zero. Still, in fishing, where danger is always close at hand, every decision is of the utmost importance. Higashimine: "Master, it looks like we'll have to make a short boat trip today." Yamazaki: "We couldn't make it today, but maybe tomorrow?" Higashimine: "Tomorrow for sure! We'll do our best!" There are different people in charge of maintaining the boats and fishing gear. For that reason, fishing holidays are one of Master's few days off. Higashimine: "Would you be happy if your dad was here?" Rentora: "Yes! He's so cool! Good luck!" Higashimine: "What's your dad like?" Kitatora: "He's a strong guy. Amazing." The next day... they set sail to fish for yellowtail in search of "yellowtail treasure"! Higashimine: "Master! Good morning! Do you think we'll be able to set sail today?" Yamazaki: "I think we'll be able to set sail today." We set sail a little early that day, at 3:30 AM! We headed for the fixed nets off the coast of Akita, Shakotan Town. Yamazaki: "There are absolutely no waves." Higashimine: "Absolutely no waves! I'm surprised! Your father is on board with us today." Yamazaki: "Yes." Azumamine: "Captain." Yamazaki: "He's not a man of many words, but he speaks with his actions." Captain Yamazaki Toshiyuki, his mentor's father: "Is the tide strong?" Yamazaki: "Not right now." In addition to wave height, while steering the boat, they also make fishing decisions by observing the speed of the tide. If the tide is strong, they won't be able to raise the nets. Yamazaki: "Shall we go?" Higashimine: "Okay, let's go!" We arrived at the fishing grounds with the fixed nets in about 30 minutes! We immediately began preparations. Yamazaki: "Let's melt the ice..." Higashimine: "Wow!" Captain Yamazaki Toshiyuki, his master's father: "Do it right! Look! Look at the ice!" Yamazaki: "We'll fill the tank with yellowtail until it's full." Higashimine: "Wow! It can hold that many!" From a depth of about 56 meters, they raise the net. Yamazaki: "The net is like a big bag. These are yellowtail bubbles." Higashimine: "Yees, yellowtail bubbles." Yamazaki: "When all of this comes out, that means there must be a huge amount." Using a tool called a "key," they slowly reel the net in. Higashimine: "Amazing! The bubbles are incredible!" Yamazaki: "Big catch! Big catch! There they are! The waves are starting to rise! Look, I can already see the yellowtail." Higashimine: "Ah! Is that a yellowtail?! Wow! It's huge!" They put the camera underwater... There were loads of yellowtail... They were right there! Finally, the net is hauled in by hand! Captain Yamazaki Toshiyuki, my master's father: "Heeeyyy!! Shout out, 'Heeey ... Yamazaki: "Stick your hand inside the gills. That's it, that's it, hold it tight!" Azuma: "Ah! Wait a moment. ...
