Dead Horse Point State Park is located 32 miles from Moab and only 14.5 miles from the Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky District. It is a must-see when visiting around Moab. Dead Horse Point State Park is composed of a small peninsula extending off a huge plateau and has amazing views of the Colorado River and the La Sal Mountains. The park gets its name because it was supposedly used as a natural horse corral and some horses died from exposure. We visited Dead Horse Point State Park twice and we've enjoyed hiking the Rim Loop Trail. The Rim Loop Trail consists of the West Rim Trail and East Rim Trail. When hiked together, they make up a 6-mile loop. We started the hike from the Visitor Center and hiked the trail in a counter-clockwise direction.
