Like many streets in the Europe district, it bears the name of a European capital. Its name corresponds to the city of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. The street was thus named to celebrate the relations between France and the Netherlands. This street was opened by an ordinance of February 2, 1826, which authorized speculators Jonas Hagerman and Sylvain Mignon to create, on their plot of land—heathland and marshland located between Les Porcherons and Petite-Pologne—a 12-meter-wide thoroughfare, between the Clichy gate and Rue Saint-Lazare. It received its current name on August 5, 1826.
