Also known as tizirro, saltador, veludinho, papa-arroz, bater-estaca (Rio de Janeiro), serrador, serra-serra, and alfaiate. Scientific Name Its scientific name means: from the (Latin) volatinia, diminutive of volatus = flight, short flight; and from the (Tupi) jacarini = one who flies up and down. ⇒ A short-flight bird that flies up and down. This reference is peculiar to the type of flight practiced by this bird, which, while leaping upward and landing in the same place, emits its characteristic "ti" "ti" "tiziu" call. Characteristics It is about 11.5 centimeters long. The male is all black with a metallic blue sheen, except for a small white spot on the underside of its wings. They molt twice per year. After the post-nuptial molt, they acquire resting plumage. The adult male loses the bluish-black plumage on its head, back and chest and becomes similar to young males of its species.
